Conservatory Furniture: Buying & Aftercare Tips
By Barclay Jones
Conservatory is expensive, so you need to make sure you invest carefully and take care of it. Here are tips to help you achieve both of those things.

First and foremost, it’s important to know which materials are best for conservatory furniture. Soft woods are no good because the varying temperatures in a conservatory will cause them to rot. So if you were thinking of dragging in an old chair from the living room to use in the conservatory, that’s probably not a good idea.

It's difficult to recommend metal as it's uncomfortable to sit on and isn't particularly attractive. You'll also find there's a significantly smaller choice if you want metal conservatory furniture, as most manufacturers prefer other materials.

Hard woods like cane and rattan are the most popular types of material for use in a conservatory and for good reason. They do require a little bit of care and attention, but offer comfort, durability and good visual appeal, which is a great combination.

Cane (like similar

plant-based materials) is perfect for use in a conservatory because it can handle the changes of temperature without rotting or becoming brittle. However, what it does need is exposure to sunlight to keep it in good condition, so make sure it’s positioned accordingly so that it receives a good amount of natural light. You might consider rotating your occasionally to ensure everything receives time in the sun.

On the flip side of that, you don’t want the cushions on your conservatory to be over-exposed to the sun, as that can cause them to fade. Investing in blinds or buying a cheap throw to put over the cushions, will ensure the colours remain vibrant for much longer.

In the summer months, you also need to make sure that your conservatory is adequately ventilated. Although cane can handle a certain level of heat and humidity, over time damage could be done. Most modern conservatories are built with temperature and humidity control in mind, so it might not be an issue you have to worry about.
It really is worth investing in the right kind of conservatory furniture and taking the time to ensure it’s properly looked after. Not only will it save you a lot of bother, it could potentially save you a lot of money.
